Polar Brrr Swim – January 1st 2016
admin2016-02-27T04:59:58-08:00Thanks to all involved in the 5th annual Polar BRRR swim. It was very successful and could not have happened without the support of the swimmers, volunteers and the community. This year there were 39 registered swimmers and at least 3 others. The total raised for the Galiano Health Care Society was over $2000. We look forward to an even bigger event next year with prizes going to the “best costume” and “most money raised”.
Join the Galiano Health Care Society to celebrate the New Year – with a dip in the chilly waters at Montague Harbour Provincial Park. January 1st 2016 at 12 noon sharp. Can we dare you to jump into the water? If not, can we entice you to join the throng of support on the beach? We”ll have snacks available too. Proceeds from sponsorship, registration fee and general donations all go directly to the Galiano Health Care Society [Read More…]
Portable Electronic Defibrillators now on Galiano
admin2015-07-31T01:15:00-07:00
The GHCS is pleased to announce a successful collaborative project with many community businesses, individuals and groups that now has seen at least 14 automated defibrillators (AED’s) distributed to sites on Galiano Island that are accessible to the public.
If you witness someone collapse, or discover someone who is non-responsive, first call 911 for help and then ideally be able to send someone to locate the nearest defibrillator while you provide first aid and/or CPR to the unconscious patient. Check out the map for locations.
The defibrillators are easy to use – they give voice prompts and will not shock a patient unless the heart rhythm indicates that a shock is advisable.
Take a peek at the flyer details in this post – there are a series of CPR & [Read More…]
First Call RN Service Cuts – Our Response
admin2015-03-18T16:07:26-07:00In recent weeks the Galiano Health Care Society Board of Directors has been working closely with our health practitioners and community members to formulate a strategic plan to respond to the Island Health service cuts that eliminated on-call RN coverage on weekends last November 2014.
Last week a local contingent of Board and community members presented over 600 signatures on a petition from Galiano Island that implored the government to respond and ensure adequate health care on our island.
This week our President, Mike Hoebel, submitted a letter to the editor seeking correction of facts stated by Island Health regarding our health care coverage on Galiano Island. Here is the published letter for you to review:
One of our First Call RN’s, Diana Lilly, wrote a letter to the Island Tides paper pleading with the Health authority to reinstate the on-call RN positions. Diana describes the care she [Read More…]
Automated External Defibrillators (AED’s) available / course information
admin2015-03-10T21:54:03-07:00Automated External Defibrillators (AED’s) are small portable machines that can check a person’s heart by automatically recognizing the beat rhythm. If the person’s heart rhythm is inadequate to keep the person alive, the machine can automatically administer an electric shock through the skin to the heart muscle. This small shock causes the heart to re-boot and then it may enter back into a normal rhythm. These machines have been proven to save lives in shopping malls, ice hockey rinks, sporting events and many other community places across the country.
Thanks to a number of private donors, plus the work of a small & busy group of local volunteers including the Galiano Health Care Society, Geoff Gaylor and other local business owners as well as interested islanders, Galiano Island is now installing 13 AED’s in prominent places. A map/list of locations will be available shortly. With many locations anyone witnessing a person’s collapse [Read More…]

Service Cut – First Call Nurse (weekends)
admin2014-11-26T18:37:05-08:00The Galiano Health Care Society received sudden notice that our First Call Nurse coverage (emergency coverage on weekends) would cease mid-November. There was no advance warning or negotiations. This means that we now have three weekends a month without on-island emergency medical care.
911 services with the first responders and paramedics will continue to operate, however they will not have access to the emergency room at the clinic, nor will there be access to after-hours medications.
Dr Carlson will continue with her on call services one weekend a month, but on other weekends there will only be an off-island doctor available via phone.
This cut in services is very concerning. You can take action by contacting Island Health and the Minister of Health to express your opinion.
please review the press release from Island Health regarding Galiano’s on call coverage cut. 2014-11 VIHA HCC-FC
We ask you to also review the formal response from GHCS along with [Read More…]
