The Capital Regional District has approved a referendum on behalf of the Galiano Health Care Society – to be held on November 15, 2014.
The GHCS owns and operates the Health Care Centre building. Right now we have a great team of health professionals provided by VIHA and using the Centre to serve our community. However VIHA is unwilling to provide sufficient funding to cover the costs of managing and operating the Health Care Centre itself. Each year our Board has energetically fundraised and sourced donations to make up a shortfall of approximately $60,000 just to keep our doors open.
That effort is proving more challenging due to economic constraints together with rising maintenance costs. We have reached the point where the Board has had to make the difficult decision to go to the community for support via a property tax levy.
See the attached document for answers to some common questions people are raising. If your question is not answered by this or you have other comments, please do come to our Public Meeting on September 28th at 1pm at the Lion’s Hall. Everyone’s welcome!

Thank you to the Galiano community for your enthusiasm and support for the Nunsense performances this weekend. A big thank you to the cast – Lynette Salton, Sherry Harapat, Elaine Hazelrigg, Julie Kehler and Richard Helvig. An equally large thank you to Linda and Judy for organizing/coordinating/juggling/encouraging excellence and entertainment before, during and after the events.
The Board of Directors thanks everyone for their generous support through attendance and cash donations – it will make a big difference – positively – for our health centre this year.
Now we can start preparing for the Wine and Beer Festival on August 9th!
Dr Erin Carlson has been busy with volunteers in the new Galiano Clinic Garden Plot – located at the rear of the Lion’s Field in the new community allotment garden area. Here’s a peek at some early harvest from our garden. If you’re interested in helping in the garden or would like to sample the produce, let one of the staff at the Clinic know and they’ll point you in the right direction. Hmmm. I wonder what will be growing over the summer?
On Wednesday June 4th at 2pm in the Galiano Library meeting room, you are invited to join us for an afternoon reading of High Clear Bell of Morning, a new novel by author Ann Eriksson. The book takes a journey with a family affected by mental illness.

The Galiano Health Care Society wishes to thank everyone who participated in Saturday’s 2013 Wine and Beer Festival – our major fundraiser for the year. For the first time ever we sold out of tickets! (new provincial licensing regulations limit the number of patrons). We apologize to those who could not get tickets this year – next year we will again offer online reservations and pre-ticket sales at venues on Galiano.
A very big thank you to our Festival Coordinator – Ms Sylvie Beauregard – and her busy team of volunteers together with our clinic manager Linda Ruedrich who put in many hours of work over recent months to make the Festival such a success. There are too many volunteers to name everyone, so if you were a volunteer in any capacity, this acknowledgment is for you!
We had incredible support from this year’s wineries and breweries – without their participation the Festival would not operate. Feedback about the various products available indicated a strong appreciation for the vendors and we have heard that many patrons will seek out local products from their liqour outlets.
Final tallies are not yet in, but we anticipate that this event’s revenue will be significant and it will be applied directly to ensuring that Galiano has accessible comprehensive health care services for the coming year.
Thanks Galiano (and to those who came from other islands, Victoria and Vancouver) for making this year’s festival an enjoyable and successful event!
Jo Rippin- Family Nurse Practitioner
I am delighted to join the team of health care providers at the Galiano Island Health Care Centre. I thoroughly enjoyed over three months of clinical hours as a student at the centre under the preceptorship of Leanne Rowand, and it is a pleasure to be returning to the community and the Health Care Centre as a family nurse practitioner. I graduated from UVic’s Master of Nursing program in 2011. Since then I have had temporary work in a few primary care practices in Victoria.
My husband and I have two teenaged daughters and a cat. Our extended families are spread across the country and Europe, so we enjoy traveling to visit them and to explore new places. We have always been amazed by the beauty of the Southern Gulf Islands, and have enjoyed visits and stays on Galiano and Pender Islands. We are looking forward to spending more time getting to know the people and places on Galiano and settling into the community. In particular, we are hoping to spend a lot of time on the water – probably canoeing or kayaking to begin with.
I am looking forward to getting settled into work at the Galiano Island Health Care Centre and contributing to the exceptional team of health care providers!
