Today we are announcing the Galiano Island Journal Club for local and rural physicians.  A “Journal Club” is a group where colleagues can meet to discuss recent research papers, trends in the profession, and relevant cases in their areas of interest.

The journal club’s initial members are Dr. C. Laird Birmingham (epidemiologist), Dr. Brian Russell (paediatrician), Dr. Cathy Stephenson (paediatric anaesthetist) and Dr. Janice Mason (sports medicine).

Dr. Laird Birmingham is the Medical Director at the Woodstone Residential Treatment Centre for Eating Disorders on Galiano.

Dr. Russell comes to us from Campbell River where he was chief of medical staff. He is doing his best to “retire” to Galiano (and appears to have a very different idea of retiring than most) while at the same time leaving Campbell River’s medical situation set up for success going forward.

Dr. Stephenson trained in Britain and practiced at BC Children’s hospital. One of her main interests has been teaching anaesthetist residents and junior doctors.

Dr. Mason is a sports medicine doctor working in Victoria at WorkSafeBC. She’s a board member at Woodwynn Farms, a farm in Central Saanich on Vancouver Island that is establishing a Therapeutic Community to help homeless people get back on their feet again – focus on farming as a way of working hard, working the land to regain ones productive place in the community.

We are interested in the possibility of expanding this journal club to other rural practices, where folks might feel the need to reach out to a gathering like ours, perhaps using online tools. If you would like to know more about our journal club or anything else about Galiano Health Care drop us a line on the contact form of the Galiano Health Care Society website.
