2024 Year in Review

Feb 7, 2025

Fundraising Success and Community Generosity

The GHCS Gala events of 2023 and 2024 were very successful thanks to our local businesses, as well as your incredible generosity.  In 2024 we raised a total of $50,000 through events.  These funds allowed us to purchase vital diagnostic equipment including an ultrasound machine and dermatoscopes, and increase RN services, significantly enhancing patient care.

Improving Accessibility

Online Travel Assistance Program (TAP) forms now make it easier for residents to arrange travel for medical appointments. Additionally, patients can now book doctor appointments with our new online appointment booking, streamlining access to care.

Collaborative Efforts

GHCS is an active member of the Outer Gulf Islands Health Services Ad Hoc Collaboration group. This group unites the health care societies of Galiano, Mayne, Pender and Saturna (total population est. 7000) in lobbying for enhanced health services on our islands. Currently the group is providing guidance and feedback in the development of the Salish Sea Primary Care Network proposal to be put forward by and on behalf of our practitioners. We will continue to use our collective voices in this way to advocate with Island Health and the Ministry of Health for a sustainable health services funding.

Mental Health and Wellness

We remain deeply committed to supporting the mental health and wellness of our community. Andrew Simmons is available to offer resources and support for mental health and substance misuse/addictions and we are seeking more funding to increase our services.

Celebrating Key Achievements
Housing for Physicians

In partnership with the CRD, we secured housing for our physicians at the Betty Kennedy House.  Secure accommodation is an important part of recruitment.

Leadership Update

Dr. Mommsen-Smith stepped into the role of Medical Director, bringing a wealth of experience and vision to our team.

Continuity of Care

We are thrilled to welcome a return-to-practice physician on a three-year contract, ensuring stable care for our patients. We’re also actively working to recruiting new doctors and a nurse practitioner to further expand our team.

Registered Nurse Support

Due to the generosity of our community, we were able to employ an RN to work alongside physicians in the clinic. With this RN support, we were able to provide additional patient visits this year. Having an RN on staff is not only a benefit for patient care but also key to attracting future care providers.

Staffing Transitions

Linda Ruedrich is no longer with the Galiano Health Care Society. GHCS thanks her for her 22 years of outstanding and dedicated service to the Society and to the Galiano Community.  We are very pleased to announce that long time Associate Director Lindsay Williams has accepted the position of GHCS Executive Director.

This year, we bid also farewell to Nancy McPhee, our long-serving Community Wellness Coordinator, whose contributions have left a lasting legacy. We are excited to welcome Mark Adam and Skyllar Erickson who will lead programs like Community Wellness and Better at Home with fresh energy and passion.

Commitment to Safety and Excellence

Over the past year, we’ve reviewed, improved  and implemented clinic policies and procedures particularly regarding workplace safety, occupational health, and incident reporting. With the help of an external reviewer, we have implemented a number of changes to ensure and prioritize a safe and supportive work environment for our staff, patients and volunteers.

As we look ahead to 2025, we remain dedicated to enhancing health care services and supporting the well-being of our unique island community. Thank you for being a part of this journey and for helping us achieve so much this year.

Watch for further info regarding our AGM, which will be held Sunday, April 27th at the Galiano Community Hall. Please join us.

Warm regards,
The Galiano Health Care Society
