Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) Update

May 1, 2024

The administration and dentist at Galiano Island Dental, in keeping with our commitment to wide ranging access to care, are planning to participate in the CDCP. But there will be some delays before this becomes a reality. We will provide updates over the next few months.

  1. The earliest we will be able provide care for patients using the CDCP is November 2024. The CDCP does not currently accept paper claims and the clinic does not currently have dental software to send claims. So, we are not able to participate in CDCP.
  2. The provincial and federal dental organizations are advocating for improvements to the plan. As a result, there have been some important changes made recently by Health Canada.
  3. Almost all patients will be required to pay a portion of any treatment fee. Even for those in the 0- $60,000/year group, the Health Canada fee schedule will not cover the entire amount. But it will cover most of the cost for basic procedures.
  4. We asked the government to fairly pay for your dental care by respecting the suggested provincial fee guide. These fee guides help us set fees that are transparent, fair and predictable for patients.
  5. Dental offices are like minihospitals and there’s a lot that goes into the cost of care – expensive equipment, infection control, rent, utilities, staffing costs and high levels of training, and so much more.
  6. We acknowledge that this is very important to many of our patients. We genuinely support having a government program that will allow all Canadians to get needed dental care.
