Automated External Defibrillators (AED’s) are small portable machines that can check a person’s heart by automatically recognizing the beat rhythm. If the person’s heart rhythm is inadequate to keep the person alive, the machine can automatically administer an electric shock through the skin to the heart muscle. This small shock causes the heart to re-boot and then it may enter back into a normal rhythm. These machines have been proven to save lives in shopping malls, ice hockey rinks, sporting events and many other community places across the country.
Thanks to a number of private donors, plus the work of a small & busy group of local volunteers including the Galiano Health Care Society, Geoff Gaylor and other local business owners as well as interested islanders, Galiano Island is now installing 13 AED’s in prominent places. A map/list of locations will be available shortly. With many locations anyone witnessing a person’s collapse in the community can quickly access a defibrillator. The defibrillator will decide if it can/should shock the person’s heart.
Operating an AED is straight forward – there are voice prompts from the machine all the way. But in case you are unsure, there will be free classes available soon to teach you how to use an AED and explain it’s role in the resuscitation process. An AED does not replace CPR, but it is a valuable tool.
If you have any questions about our AED program or if you wish to borrow a loaner AED for your on-island event (at no cost) please email us at firstname.lastname@example.org
For information about our AED’s check out the Iridia website

Galiano Island Health Care Centre in collaboration with local businesses and residents has now installed a number of Automatic External Defibrillators (AED’s) in prominent places up and down the island. Designed for public to use if someone collapses, the AED’s will monitor the person’s heart beat and apply a small electric shock if the machine decides that it could help resuscitate the collapsed person.
A series of public information and familiarization sessions are now underway.
On Sunday March 15 a Public Access Defibrillator orientation will be held at the North Community Hall from 1-3pm (**note change of date) –

The Galiano Health Care Society received sudden notice that our First Call Nurse coverage (emergency coverage on weekends) would cease mid-November. There was no advance warning or negotiations. This means that we now have three weekends a month without on-island emergency medical care.
911 services with the first responders and paramedics will continue to operate, however they will not have access to the emergency room at the clinic, nor will there be access to after-hours medications.
Dr Carlson will continue with her on call services one weekend a month, but on other weekends there will only be an off-island doctor available via phone.
This cut in services is very concerning. You can take action by contacting Island Health and the Minister of Health to express your opinion.
please review the press release from Island Health regarding Galiano’s on call coverage cut. 2014-11 VIHA HCC-FC

The Capital Regional District has approved a referendum on behalf of the Galiano Health Care Society – to be held on November 15, 2014.
The GHCS owns and operates the Health Care Centre building. Right now we have a great team of health professionals provided by VIHA and using the Centre to serve our community. However VIHA is unwilling to provide sufficient funding to cover the costs of managing and operating the Health Care Centre itself. Each year our Board has energetically fundraised and sourced donations to make up a shortfall of approximately $60,000 just to keep our doors open.
That effort is proving more challenging due to economic constraints together with rising maintenance costs. We have reached the point where the Board has had to make the difficult decision to go to the community for support via a property tax levy.
See the attached document for answers to some common questions people are raising. If your question is not answered by this or you have other comments, please do come to our Public Meeting on September 28th at 1pm at the Lion’s Hall. Everyone’s welcome!
