Polar Brrr Swim – January 1st 2016

2016-02-27T04:59:58-08:00

Thanks to all involved in the 5th annual Polar BRRR swim.  It was very successful and could not have happened without the support of the swimmers, volunteers and the community.  This year there were 39 registered swimmers and at least 3 others.  The total raised for the Galiano Health Care Society was over $2000.  We look forward to an even bigger event next year with prizes going to the “best costume” and “most money raised”.

The GHCS is pleased to announce a successful collaborative project with many community businesses, individuals and groups that now has seen at least 14 automated defibrillators (AED’s) distributed to sites on Galiano Island that are accessible to the public.

If you witness someone collapse, or discover someone who is non-responsive, first call 911 for help and then ideally be able to send someone to locate the nearest defibrillator while you provide first aid and/or CPR to the unconscious patient. Check out the map for locations.

The defibrillators are easy to use – they give voice prompts and will not shock a patient unless the heart rhythm indicates that a shock is advisable.

Take a peek at the flyer details in this post – there are a series of CPR & [Read More…]

AGM 2015 Minutes and Reports

2015-04-30T19:37:32-07:00

agmThank you to everyone who attended the Annual General Meeting of the Galiano Health Care Society on Sunday April 26, 2015. The reports from the AGM are linked below for your review.

Coming soon: AGM Minutes

Following the business meeting we heard presentations from Colette Legace (Home and Community Care RN) and Diana Lilly (First Call Nurse) – both are retiring after many years of service to Galiano residents and visitors. We also note that Kathy Chapman (First Call RN) is no longer working with us (both First Call positions were eliminated by Island Health in the Fall 2014). Jo Rippin (Nurse Practitioner) also announced that she is leaving Galiano at the end of May for a position in Victoria.

A heartfelt thank you to all nurses mentioned above for their commitment to caring for Galiano-ites over the years. We are all the better (and healthier) for your work.

First Call RN Service Cuts – Our Response

2015-03-18T16:07:26-07:00

pen writingIn recent weeks the Galiano Health Care Society Board of Directors has been working closely with our health practitioners and community members to formulate a strategic plan to respond to the Island Health service cuts that eliminated on-call RN coverage on weekends last November 2014.

Last week a local contingent of Board and community members presented over 600 signatures on a petition from Galiano Island that implored the government to respond and ensure adequate health care on our island.

This week our President, Mike Hoebel, submitted a letter to the editor seeking correction of facts stated by Island Health regarding our health care coverage on Galiano Island. Here is the published letter for you to review:

Automated External Defibrillators (AED’s) available / course information

2015-03-10T21:54:03-07:00

Automated External Defibrillators (AED’s) are small portable machines that can check a person’s heart by automatically recognizing the beat rhythm. If the person’s heart rhythm is inadequate to keep the person alive, the machine can automatically administer an electric shock through the skin to the heart muscle. This small shock causes the heart to re-boot and then it may enter back into a normal rhythm. These machines have been proven to save lives in shopping malls, ice hockey rinks, sporting events and many other community places across the country.

Thanks to a number of private donors, plus the work of a small & busy group of local volunteers including the Galiano Health Care Society, Geoff Gaylor and other local business owners as well as interested islanders, Galiano Island is now installing 13 AED’s in prominent places. A map/list of locations will be available shortly. With many locations anyone witnessing a person’s collapse [Read More…]
